Why go
This is a sharp exterior stop for seeing architectural taste change. Baccio d'Agnolo built the palace from 1520 to 1523 with columns, pilasters and triangular window pediments then unusual in Florence. The hostile reaction survives in a defiant Latin inscription above the door.
What to look for
- Columns flank the portal, while triangular pediments give the windows a distinctly Roman character.
- The doorway inscription means 'Criticizing is easier than imitating.'
- Poppy emblems accompany the Salimbeni motto Per non dormire, 'Not to sleep.'
Useful to know
- Plan this as an exterior architecture stop; general palace access is not established.
- Stand across Piazza Santa Trinita to compare it with the medieval Palazzo Spini Feroni.
- Look closely above the portal and windows for the inscriptions and poppy emblems.
