Why go
The crossing gives a clear view of how Florence’s working bridges connect neighborhoods as well as periods. A wooden bridge stood here by 1218; later versions fell to floods, crowd weight and war before Ettore Fagiuoli’s present design opened in 1948.
What to look for
- Five arches carry the present bridge across the Arno.
- The northern end arrives at Piazza Carlo Goldoni; the southern end reaches Piazza Nazario Sauro.
- The current structure replaced a bridge destroyed during the German retreat in 1944.
Useful to know
- Use the bridge as a direct transition between the center and western Oltrarno.
- Compare its 1948 profile with Ponte Santa Trinita to the east during the same river walk.
