Why go
This route suits a traveler who likes reading a city through its public spaces rather than spending most of the day in a museum. Kerameikos Archaeological Site opens with cemetery and gate remains on the old edge of Athens. The Ancient Agora of Athens brings the civic centre into view; the nearby Roman Agora of Athens shows a later market, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus ends the walk at a temple on a much larger scale. The sequence is a steady eastward walk with four separate outdoor visits. Keep each excavation focused and allow time to move between entrances, especially if you plan to inspect the Stoa of Attalos within the Ancient Agora.
