Why go
This route pairs Hilo’s indoor interpretation with the wetter landscapes north of town. Start at Rainbow Falls, where the short viewpoint works well before the day grows busier. Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii adds Hawaiian voyaging and astronomy to the volcanic island story. Continue north to Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden for a longer walk through the Onomea valley. Akaka Falls State Park is an optional final stop, since the garden and waterfall trails both deserve unhurried time. Rain is part of the setting, but heavy showers can change footing and visibility. Check access at each site and keep the afternoon flexible.
