Why go
This Lantau outing pairs a compact coastal fort with the island’s best-known Buddhist landmarks. Begin at Tung Chung Fort, walk back towards the cable car terminal and travel up to Ngong Ping. Give Tian Tan Buddha’s steps a full hour before slowing down among Po Lin Monastery’s halls and gardens. The connection includes a substantial walk and boarding allowance, so check the cable car’s service status and reserve your journey in advance where appropriate. Choose a day when the fort’s visitor facilities are open, and allow extra breaks on the Buddha stairway. Allow about 75 minutes to return to Tung Chung after Po Lin, bringing visits and transfers to about six hours; meals and extended queues take extra time.
