The name recalls the Gospel episode in which Jesus wept over Jerusalem, making the view across the valley part of the church's meaning. Excavations here uncovered burial grounds from different periods and remains of a Byzantine monastery. That layered history gives the small sanctuary more to consider than its panorama alone, especially after seeing the city from the higher ridge.
What to look for
Compare this closer view of the Old City with the wider panorama higher on the Mount of Olives.
Archaeological remains include tombs from several eras and traces of a Byzantine monastery.
Useful to know
Place it between a higher Mount of Olives viewpoint and Gethsemane if you are walking downhill.
Check the church's current access before making the interior essential to your route.
