Why go
This south shore route works for visitors who want a slower outdoor day with more meaning than a string of beach stops. Start in the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, then walk to the Key West Lighthouse for a stop rooted in the island's maritime history before turning toward South Beach. The longer walk east leads to Higgs Beach. Nearby, the African Cemetery memorial asks for a quiet, respectful visit; the garden at West Martello offers a different place to pause at the end. The beach time is flexible, but allow for the two walks around the lighthouse and a roughly one kilometer connection from South Beach to Higgs. The garden is optional if heat or weather shortens the day.
