Why go
The theatre gives Rossio a monumental northern edge and connects Portuguese drama with the square's more difficult past. It replaced the Estaus Palace, once used by the Inquisition, with a Palladian-influenced design dedicated to Queen Maria II and promoted by writer and statesman Almeida Garrett.
What to look for
- Six Ionic columns reused from the former Saint Francis Convent support the portico.
- Apollo and the Muses fill the triangular pediment above the façade.
- A statue of playwright Gil Vicente crowns a building raised on the former Inquisition site.
Useful to know
- Consult the official programme for performance or tour access; do not assume the auditorium is open for visits.
- For the exterior, stand in Rossio's open center to read the full portico and pediment.
