Basilica of Saint-Martin d'Ainay
A compact Romanesque basilica in the southern Presqu'île, with ancient reused stone and a quieter character than Lyon's larger churches.
Why go
Ainay offers the clearest contrast to the Gothic cathedral and ornate Fourvière basilica. Its heavy forms, restrained proportions and old masonry make the building feel rooted in an earlier architectural language. The surrounding quarter also provides a calmer extension south of Bellecour.
What to look for
Romanesque massing and compact bell tower
Ancient stone reused within the church fabric
Useful to know
Combine it with Bellecour and the southern Presqu'île.
