From the Lyon World / Places

Place Bellecour

A vast central square with an equestrian statue of Louis XIV and open sightlines toward Fourvière, useful for both orientation and onward walks.

Place Bellecour

Why go

Bellecour is less about intimate detail than urban scale. Standing in its open center makes the Presqu'île's north-south axis easy to grasp, while the basilica appears above the rooftops to the west. It is also a practical hinge between riverbanks, shopping streets and Ainay.

What to look for

  • The equestrian statue of Louis XIV
  • An unobstructed view toward Fourvière
  • The broad open plane within dense Presqu'île streets

Useful to know

  • Use the square as a meeting point and route junction.
  • Cross it early or later in the day when the open paving is cooler.
