Temples, lakes and highland towns
Bagan's archaeological plain, Inle Lake's highland waters and Kyaiktiyo's Golden Rock show how widely Myanmar's landmark destinations differ in setting and scale.
Bagan is for time among surviving monuments of the Pagan kingdom. Inle Lake shifts the focus to Shan State's freshwater landscape and distinctive ecology. Kyaiktiyo is a pilgrimage destination centered on a gold covered boulder; Kengtung brings the history of an eastern Shan town. Use these as choices for different regions and interests, not as a single day of stops.

The route, stop by stop
Times are planning estimates. Unknown visit durations start at an editable 30 minutes; access is checked separately.
Start with the contrast between Yangon's urban religious sites, Bagan's temple plain and Inle Lake's waters, then decide which nearby towns deepen your route.
Bagan spreads thousands of surviving Buddhist temples and pagodas across an Irrawaddy plain, making the former Pagan kingdom visible at landscape scale.
Mount Popa pairs a volcanic landscape with nat shrines near Bagan. Distinguish the broad volcano from Taung Kalat, the steep volcanic plug crowned by a monastery.
Mrauk U is a historic town in northern Rakhine where temples sit among hills and waterways. Its former role as an Arakanese capital rewards a slower archaeological visit.
Thandwe is a coastal town in Rakhine State, set where the Rakhine Mountains approach the Bay of Bengal. It offers context for the region beyond its beaches.
Ngwe Saung is a long beach west of Pathein on Myanmar’s Bay of Bengal coast. Its main appeal is space for an extended shoreline walk and a coastal stay.
Pyay is an Ayeyarwady River town and the main base for exploring nearby Sri Ksetra, an ancient Pyu city. Its river setting also tells a later trade story.
Pathein is a river port at the western edge of the Ayeyarwady delta. Its handmade parasols and working waterfront give a clearer reason to stop than its size alone.
