From the Nottingham World / Places

City of Caves

Descend beneath the city for sandstone passages, a medieval tannery and wartime shelters; enclosed spaces and uneven ground make this a deliberate underground visit.

Why go

The caves reveal how Nottingham’s soft rock became working space, shelter and part of everyday urban life. Seeing the tannery and air-raid spaces together makes their changing uses tangible. This is a separate underground attraction from the castle caves and the courtroom displays at the National Justice Museum.

What to look for

  • A medieval tannery was cut into the sandstone.
  • The caves include Second World War air-raid shelters.
  • Rock-cut passages run beneath the city.

Useful to know

  • Use the Garner’s Hill entrance beside Nottingham Contemporary.
  • Bring headphones for the audio guide.
  • Use toilets before descending; there are none on site.
