Palazzo Abatellis
A Gothic-Catalan palace in the Kalsa houses Sicily's regional art gallery. Its strongest draws are the Triumph of Death fresco and Antonello da Messina's Annunciata.
Two works make this a focused art stop: the large, unsettling Triumph of Death and the quiet close-up of the Virgin Annunciate. The 15th-century palace frames them with its own architectural story, while Francesco Laurana's sculpted bust gives a third, very different encounter with Renaissance portraiture.
What to look for
The large Triumph of Death fresco
Antonello da Messina's Virgin Annunciate
Francesco Laurana's Bust of a Gentlewoman
Useful to know
Give the major works separate attention rather than rushing straight through the gallery.
Combine the museum with a Kalsa walk; the palace itself is part of the district's historic fabric.
