San Frediano

San Frediano is a Romanesque church with a patterned stone façade in Pisa's centre. Its medieval painted cross adds a reason to seek interior access if a visit is possible.

Why go

Look at the blind arches, lozenges and alternating stone colours on the façade, then compare them with Pisa's larger Romanesque churches. Inside, a twelfth-century gilded cross painted with scenes of the Passion survives alongside later altars and paintings. The contrast shows how a medieval church changed without losing its original basilica plan.

What to look for

  • Blind arches and lozenge shapes mark the Romanesque façade.
  • Alternating stone colours recall a wider Pisan building tradition.
  • A gilded twelfth-century painted cross carries Passion scenes inside.

The full story

San Frediano is documented from 1061 and preserves the outline of a medieval basilica despite later changes. Its façade combines blind arcades, diamond-shaped inlays and alternating light and dark stone, details that link it to Pisa's Romanesque tradition. Inside, the nave and aisles survived a seventeenth-century fire. The most distinctive work is a twelfth-century painted cross on a gilded ground, with scenes from the Passion around the Crucifixion. Later Baroque altars and paintings show that the building continued to change in use and taste. That mixture is what makes the church rewarding if it is open: the façade announces its medieval origin, while the interior shows centuries of devotion in the same plan. Even from outside, its modest scale offers a close comparison with the much grander Cathedral.

Useful to know
