Petřín Lookout Tower

A steel lookout tower above Petřín's gardens offers elevated Prague views, but reaching the top adds a demanding climb after the ascent of the hill.

Petřín Lookout Tower

Why go

The Eiffel-inspired tower is a distinct landmark on Petřín's upper plateau. Its viewing platforms shift the perspective from garden paths to the city panorama, making it a clear target for a hill walk rather than just another point on the slope.

What to look for

  • The open steel framework gives the 1891 tower its Eiffel-inspired shape.
  • Viewing platforms look out over Prague from above the gardens.
  • A small exhibition occupies the tower's lower level.

The full story

Members of the Club of Czech Tourists saw the Eiffel Tower at the 1889 Paris exposition and returned with an idea for a Prague lookout. Petřínská rozhledna was built for the 1891 General Land Centennial Exhibition. Its steel frame evokes the Paris tower, but its octagonal footprint and base are different. The structure later served as a television transmission point before that role moved to the Žižkov Television Tower. Those changes make it more than a view platform: it is also a record of how Prague reused a late nineteenth-century exhibition landmark. Look at the frame from below before climbing, then use the height to place the Vltava, Old Town and castle landscape in relation to one another. The hill approach and the tower ascent together make this a more active stop than a street-level viewpoint.

Useful to know

  • Account for the climb up Petřín before the tower ascent itself.
  • Check current tower access if you need the lift; it reaches only the lower viewing platform.
  • Pair the tower with the nearby Rose Garden on the upper plateau.
