Why go
Crossing from the COEX area into Bongeunsa brings ritual courtyards, scripture halls and a towering Buddha into direct conversation with modern Gangnam. The temple's long history also reveals how Korean Buddhism survived suppression, fire and war, continuing through repeated rebuilding.
What to look for
- The Great Statue of Maitreya Buddha rises above the temple grounds.
- Courtyards frame traditional roofs against Samseong-dong's modern skyline.
- A surviving hall preserves woodblocks of the Flower Garland Sutra.
The full story
Bongeunsa was founded in 794 during the Silla period and later became an important center of Korean Seon Buddhism. Its history includes a striking reversal during the Joseon Dynasty, when Buddhism was often suppressed. Royal patronage supported the temple's reconstruction in 1498, and Queen Munjeong's mid-sixteenth-century revival briefly made Bongeunsa a leading institutional center and the site of a national Buddhist examination. Fire and the Korean War destroyed much of the complex, so today's buildings reflect continuing repair rather than untouched survival. One hall that escaped wartime destruction preserves woodblocks of the Flower Garland Sutra carved in the nineteenth century. That endurance gives the ritual spaces extra weight. Yet the most immediate feature for many visitors is the setting. Traditional roofs, courtyards and the Great Statue of Maitreya stand directly against the towers of Samseong-dong and the COEX complex. The juxtaposition is not a decorative accident; it shows how an old religious institution remains active within one of Seoul's most intensely modern districts.
Useful to know
- Move through the courtyards quietly and give ceremonies and worshippers priority.
- Allow time for the sloping grounds rather than viewing only the entrance near COEX.
- Pair the temple with Starfield COEX Mall for a compact contrast across Samseong-dong.
