HSBC Building on the Bund

The former HSBC headquarters is a strong stop for classical architecture on the Bund, with a central dome and monumental granite facade beside the Customs House.

HSBC Building on the Bund

Why go

The building makes the historic waterfront’s banking role unusually easy to see. Its symmetrical composition and columns give it a civic scale, while entrance lions reinforce the impression of security and permanence. Close inspection adds more than a skyline photograph, especially when comparing it with the neighboring customs building.

What to look for

  • Six Ionic columns rising beneath the central dome
  • A granite facade divided into symmetrical sections
  • Bronze entrance lions guarding the former bank headquarters

The full story

Palmer & Turner designed this headquarters for the Shanghai branch of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Construction ran from 1921 to 1923, producing a building whose classical order communicated the bank’s strength. The main structure combines a steel frame with brick filling and a granite exterior. Its central dome and temple-like triangular form rise above a carefully divided facade. Inside, the octagonal hall uses another language of prestige: mosaic murals and columns cut from single blocks of Italian marble. These details help explain why the building became an emblem of the Bund’s financial world. It later served municipal government functions and subsequently housed Shanghai Pudong Development Bank. The changing occupants retained a structure built to project permanence, which is part of the interest of seeing it among the waterfront’s other institutional buildings.

Useful to know

  • Pause at No. 12 to compare the dome with the adjacent clock tower.
  • Look from across the street to read the full facade before approaching its details.
  • Confirm visitor arrangements before seeking the interior mosaic hall.
