Why go
The Campo makes Siena's public life legible in one place. During the Palio, a temporary track encircles the square and the city's contrade race before a packed crowd. Outside the festival, you can read the relationship between the open space and the Palazzo Pubblico at your own pace.
What to look for
- The brick paving radiates across the shell-shaped slope.
- Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia close the lower edge of the square.
- Fonte Gaia sits near the upper edge of the Campo.
Useful to know
- See the square before entering the Palazzo Pubblico to understand the civic setting.
- If visiting for the Palio, check the current event arrangements before approaching the square.
