Place du Marché Gayot

Pause at Place du Marché Gayot for half-timbered houses, cafe terraces and a contemporary sculpture just behind the cathedral. This is a lively square, not a current produce market.

Place du Marché Gayot

Why go

This 1769 square has a different feel from Strasbourg’s ceremonial plazas: modest half-timbered houses frame a pedestrian gathering place where former market space is now used for cafes and restaurants. Look for the surviving facades at numbers 12, 15 and 21 and Daniel Pontoreau’s Pierre trouée. It is a useful short pause between cathedral sights and the Krutenau lanes.

What to look for

  • See half-timbered houses at 12, 15 and 21 and the Pierre trouée sculpture.

Useful to know

  • The square is public; check individual cafe hours before planning a meal.
