Cities to Explore in Turkey
Turkey’s cities offer distinct starting points: Istanbul for imperial layers, Ankara for republic and ancient history, and coastal or southeastern cities for different landscapes and food.
Why go
Browse Istanbul and Ankara for two very different capital stories, then compare Bodrum’s Aegean harbor, Bursa’s early Ottoman sites and Gaziantep’s southeastern food traditions. These cities are alternatives and combinations for a wider trip, not stops on one continuous walk.
Useful to know
Choose a city by its strongest theme: Istanbul’s historic core, Ankara’s citadel, Bodrum’s harbor or Bursa’s Ottoman landmarks.
Treat cities in different regions as separate bases; this collection is not a single-day route.

Istanbul spans the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia, with the historic core on the European side and a cityscape shaped by Byzantine and Ottoman rule.
İzmir stretches around its Aegean gulf, with the historic core in Konak and a wider metropolitan area reaching toward the Gediz delta and inland plains.
Konya is a Central Anatolian city for Seljuk architecture and the heritage of Mevlana. Its main historical stops cluster around museums, mosques and Alaeddin Hill.
Antalya pairs a Mediterranean city break with layers of ancient history beneath the Taurus Mountains. Hadrian’s Gate gives a concrete starting point beyond the resort coast.
Kayseri is a Central Anatolian city beneath Mount Erciyes, with Seljuk and Ottoman monuments in its center. It also opens onto mountain and archaeological trips.
Mersin is a working Mediterranean port at the western edge of Çukurova. Its urban and coastal setting makes more sense as a regional base than as a monument circuit.
