Orto Botanico di Pisa

Pisa’s university botanical garden offers a quieter, plant-focused stop near the historic centre. Its collections and old teaching spaces reward a slower visit; check conditions before setting out.

Orto Botanico di Pisa

Why go

Founded for botanical teaching in the 16th century, the garden gives Pisa a scientific story beyond its churches and towers. Walk between plant beds, mature trees and historic university structures. The separate Botanical Museum tells a related story, but the garden’s living collections stand on their own.

What to look for

  • The garden has teaching beds, ponds, greenhouses and an arboretum.
  • An old botany institute has a façade ornamented with shells.
  • Historic university planting occupies the garden’s present site since the late 16th century.

The full story

Cosimo I de’ Medici established Pisa’s university botanical garden in 1544 and entrusted it to botanist Luca Ghini. It began by the river, moved near Santa Marta in 1563, and reached its present site in 1591. Those moves matter because the garden is both a living collection and a record of how early universities taught the study of plants. The grounds were organized for observation, with planting beds, trees, ponds and protected growing spaces rather than a single ornamental vista. A building from the first years at this site carries shell decoration on its façade, while the garden also developed collections and teaching rooms over time. Look for the contrast between the ordered botanical beds and mature arboretum: both serve the same long-running purpose of making plants available for study. The adjacent museum is a separate facility, so a garden visit should stand on its own.

Useful to know

  • Check the garden operator for weather-related closures before visiting.
  • Check the operator’s current access information if you also hope to visit the separate Botanical Museum.
