National Museum of Serbia
The National Museum on Republic Square is a strong indoor choice for Serbian history and art. Give its collections time rather than treating the building as a quick square-side stop.
Founded in 1844, the museum brings together objects and artworks from different periods, giving context to the city beyond its streets and monuments. Its central position makes it easy to pair with Republic Square, but the collection deserves its own stretch of the day. Select a few galleries rather than trying to cover everything.
What to look for
The museum building faces Prince Mihailo's monument on Republic Square.
Its collections span archaeological material, art and coins.
Serbian and international works sit within the same institution.
Useful to know
Allow a substantial indoor visit after orienting yourself on Republic Square.
Check the museum's current exhibition and visitor information before choosing galleries.
