St. Mary's Church
Bergen's oldest surviving building stands beside Bryggen. Its twin towers and rich interior make a rewarding stop for visitors tracing the city's medieval and Hanseatic history.
Look at the contrast between the Romanesque towers, the Gothic choir and the gilded furnishings inside. The church's long association with Bergen's German merchants gives its decoration a direct link to the trading quarter next door. Its position beside the wharf makes that connection easy to trace on foot.
What to look for
The paired Romanesque towers frame the west end.
A Gothic choir extends beyond the older nave.
Inside, look for the gilded altar and Baroque pulpit.
Useful to know
Pair the church with Bryggen and Schøtstuene, which are close by.
Check the church timetable before planning an interior visit; services and funerals can affect access.
