The full story
Bryggen’s wooden wharf fronts Vågen and opens into narrow passages behind the familiar facades. Go beyond the waterfront view to understand how Bergen’s Hanseatic trading quarter was laid out.
The UNESCO-listed quarter still shows the close-packed timber plots used by merchants and warehouses. Walking from the colourful front into the passages reveals overhanging galleries and an intimate working layout that the harbour panorama alone cannot show. The contrast between public frontage and hidden lanes is the heart of the visit.
- Colourful wooden facades line the harbour.
- Narrow passages lead between the timber buildings.
- Overhanging galleries appear behind the waterfront row.
Walk into the passages after seeing the harbour frontage.
Expect cobbles, steps and narrow thresholds; individual museums and shops have their own access rules.
