Bergenhus Fortress
At the entrance to Vågen, Bergenhus combines open fortress grounds with major medieval buildings. Walk the ramparts for harbour context, then decide separately whether to enter Håkon’s Hall or Rosenkrantz Tower.
Håkon’s Hall recalls Bergen’s royal role in the Middle Ages, while Rosenkrantz Tower shows a defensive site that changed over centuries. The grounds tie both buildings to the harbour they guarded and make the history legible from outside. A walk between them also shows the open space of the former royal compound.
What to look for
Håkon's Hall is the surviving medieval royal hall.
Rosenkrantz Tower rises beside the old harbour approach.
Ramparts look toward Vågen.
Useful to know
Walk the grounds first, then check separate access for the hall and tower.
Check for special events before relying on grounds access.
