Bryggens Museum
Bryggens Museum takes you beneath the postcard surface of the wharf to medieval Bergen. Excavated foundations and everyday finds make it a strong indoor companion to a walk through Bryggen.
A fire in 1955 exposed the ground for extensive excavation, and the museum stands on that site. Its remains and objects show daily life and building layers that are easy to miss among the surviving timber facades above. It is particularly useful after seeing Bryggen’s lanes and wondering what once stood below them.
