St John on the Wall
St John on the Wall is a medieval church built into a former city gate on Broad Street. Its gate, spire and interior tomb reward a short heritage visit when volunteer opening allows.
Few Bristol churches show the old city wall story as directly: the church sits above the gate itself. From the street, look at the arches and spire before going in for Walter Frampton's tombchest. The contrast between busy Broad Street and the compact medieval space is part of its appeal.
What to look for
The church rises above a surviving medieval gate.
The spire is visible from Broad Street.
Walter Frampton's tombchest survives inside.
Useful to know
Confirm opening with the Churches Conservation Trust before a dedicated trip.
Look at the gate from the street even if the church is shut.
Expect steps to the upper church and crypt.
