Fortress of Babylon
The surviving Roman walls and towers of Babylon Fortress sit inside Coptic Cairo, woven into later religious buildings. Look for them as the framework of the precinct, not as a separate castle visit.
The fort explains the unusual position of the Hanging Church, raised over a Roman gatehouse. Its remaining masonry also gives the surrounding churches and museum a physical link to Old Cairo’s earlier Roman layer, visible as you move between the sites.
What to look for
Roman towers and wall sections survive within the Coptic Cairo precinct.
The Hanging Church rises above part of the former fort.
Later religious buildings stand within the old enclosure.
Useful to know
Look at the walls while moving between the Hanging Church and Coptic Museum.
Plan around the opening rules of the individual buildings you want to enter.
