St Andrew Square

At George Street’s eastern end, St Andrew Square frames a tall monument and a grand mansion. The perimeter reveals the New Town plan without relying on access to the enclosed gardens.

St Andrew Square

Why go

The Melville Monument provides a strong central marker, while Dundas House gives the eastern side its architectural focus. Together they show how a fashionable residential square developed commercial importance. This is a useful start for a George Street walk towards Charlotte Square, its counterpart at the western end.

What to look for

  • The fluted Melville Monument commemorates Henry Dundas, first Viscount Melville.
  • Dundas House stands on the east side of the square.

The full story

Construction of St Andrew Square began in 1772 during the first phase of the New Town. It quickly became a fashionable residential address. Its position at one end of George Street gave it a clear role in the formal plan, balancing the western square rather than standing as an isolated garden. Dundas House occupies a site once intended for St Andrew’s Church. The church was instead built on George Street in 1784. In 1825, the mansion became the Royal Bank of Scotland’s head office, illustrating the square’s shift towards banking and other commercial uses during the nineteenth century. The central fluted column honours Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville. From the surrounding pavements, compare the monument’s vertical emphasis with the mansion and the long line of George Street. These relationships explain the square’s design even when a visit does not include its enclosed gardens.

Useful to know

  • View the square from the perimeter; check garden access separately before planning a pause inside.
  • Continue west along George Street to compare the square with Charlotte Square.
