The full story
Pause below Edinburgh Castle in a cobbled former market square with shops and surrounding historic streets. Its open space gives a different perspective from the narrow Royal Mile closes.
The castle dominates this lower square, making the contrast between open market ground and the rocky fortress particularly clear. Tall buildings around the edges can be easy to underestimate against Castle Rock. Cowgate, Victoria Street and the Vennel provide distinct onward walks rather than a single attraction to enter.
- Castle Rock dominates the view above the cobbled market square.
- Tall buildings frame an unusually open space within the Old Town.
- The Vennel leads past surviving portions of the old city walls.
Combine Grassmarket with Victoria Street or continue east into Cowgate for the lower Old Town.
Take the Vennel as a separate detour to look for the surviving Flodden and Telfer walls.
