Boboli Gardens
Behind the Pitti Palace, this Medici garden rewards a long, uphill walk with formal axes, sculpture, theatrical waterworks and broad views over Florence.
Why go
Boboli shows how a 16th-century court turned a hillside into architecture. Gravel avenues, terraces, grottoes and fountains unfold on intersecting axes, while Roman antiquities and later sculpture make the landscape feel closer to an open-air collection than a city park.
What to look for
Climb the main axis from the amphitheater and Egyptian obelisk toward Neptune’s fountain.
Follow Giulio Parigi’s cross-axis through terraces, water features and wooded compartments.
Look for Buontalenti’s Large Grotto and the smaller Grotto of Madama.
Useful to know
Start from the Pitti Palace side and save energy for the sustained climb up Boboli Hill.
Wear shoes suited to wide gravel avenues and allow for exposed outdoor conditions.
