Museum of Natural History, La Specola
La Specola pairs historic zoological displays with extraordinary anatomical wax models, offering a revealing look at how Enlightenment Florence collected and explained nature.
Why go
The museum preserves the character of an early public science collection. Its animal specimens remain largely in 18th- and 19th-century cases, while the anatomical waxes show an unusual meeting of close observation, medical teaching and Florentine craftsmanship at close range.
What to look for
Study the anatomical wax models, made through collaboration between artists, anatomists and craftspeople.
Notice how the zoological specimens are arranged in historic display cases.
Seek out the Tribuna di Galileo, created in 1841 to honor Galileo and the Accademia del Cimento.
Useful to know
Check which historic sections are included in general admission; some routes have separate guided-tour conditions.
Combine the museum with the nearby Pitti Palace or Boboli Gardens for a Via Romana day.
