Generalife
The Generalife is the garden residence beside the Alhambra, where courtyards, water and planted spaces offer a different pace from the fortress and palace rooms.
Here the former rural retreat of Granada's emirs shows how gardens and architecture worked together. The Patio de la Acequia gives water a central role, while the upper gardens and Water Stairway extend the visit beyond a single courtyard. It is a natural counterpart to the Alhambra's palaces in the same visit area.
What to look for
The Patio de la Acequia is arranged around a long water channel.
The upper gardens carry the route beyond the residence's main courtyard.
The Water Stairway makes flowing water part of the garden path.
Useful to know
Leave time to walk between the Generalife and the Alhambra's palace and fortress areas.
Expect outdoor paths and changes of level; consult the site's adapted route if needed.
