Why go
The church gives the Gethsemane story an architectural setting. Countries that helped fund its early twentieth-century construction appear in the decoration, which explains the name Church of All Nations. Violet glass and a deep blue ceiling create a subdued space around the exposed rock. The basilica is one part of Gethsemane, distinct from the nearby garden and grotto.
What to look for
- The exposed rock inside is the focus of the commemoration of Jesus' agony.
- Look up at the small domes and their national emblems, then notice the violet light.
- The mosaic facade faces the approach from the foot of the Mount of Olives.
Useful to know
- Pair the basilica with the nearby olive grove, but verify access to each part separately.
- Check the sanctuary's current timetable before relying on an interior visit; published opening times differ.
