The mosque gives a small but telling counterpoint to the Holy Sepulchre across the way. According to tradition, Omar declined an invitation to pray inside the church to protect its Christian use and prayed outside instead. A later mosque commemorated the event. The site also prevents a common mix-up: this Mosque of Omar is separate from the Dome of the Rock on the sanctuary platform.
What to look for
The mosque faces the Holy Sepulchre's southern courtyard.
Its minaret marks a distinct Muslim landmark in the Christian Quarter.
Useful to know
View the exterior while visiting the Holy Sepulchre; non-Muslim entry is generally restricted.
Do not confuse this mosque with the Dome of the Rock across the Old City.
