Muristan

The Muristan is a cluster of market streets beside the Holy Sepulchre. Its shops occupy ground once used by the Knights Hospitaller's hospital complex.

Muristan

Why go

A walk through the Muristan connects the Christian Quarter's present commercial life with its Crusader-era past. The Hospitallers' hospital once occupied this area; only fragments remain in and around later buildings. Those traces, including arches and connections near the Church of the Redeemer, make the market lanes more than a passage between the Holy Sepulchre and surrounding streets.

What to look for

  • Market lanes and shops occupy the former hospital area.
  • Older arches and church fragments survive among later buildings.

Useful to know

  • Walk through the Muristan between the Holy Sepulchre and Church of the Redeemer.
  • Treat shops and churches as separate venues with their own access arrangements.
