Armenian Quarter

The Armenian Quarter is the smallest of the Old City's four traditional quarters. Its streets frame the Armenian Patriarchate and St. James Monastery, offering a quieter layer of Jerusalem's Christian history.

Armenian Quarter

Why go

This quarter shows that the Old City's Christian presence extends beyond the Holy Sepulchre and Latin or Greek institutions. The Armenian Patriarchate and St. James Monastery occupy a large part of the area, giving the streets a distinctive relationship between public space and a longstanding religious community. A walk here adds useful context to the neighboring Christian and Jewish Quarters.

What to look for

  • The Armenian Patriarchate and St. James Monastery shape much of the quarter.
  • The quarter connects with the Christian and Jewish sides of the Old City.

Useful to know

  • Explore the public streets, while treating patriarchate and monastery property as separately controlled spaces.
  • Combine the quarter with nearby Christian or Jewish Quarter streets for a clearer contrast.
