Christian Quarter

The Christian Quarter occupies the Old City's northwestern side and gathers churches, monasteries and market lanes around the Holy Sepulchre. Walk it for the setting around Jerusalem's major Christian shrine.

Christian Quarter

Why go

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the quarter's main anchor, but its surrounding streets explain more of the Christian presence in the Old City. The Muristan's former Hospitaller area and the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer add different historical layers nearby. Moving among them gives a sense of a living religious district rather than one monumental church.

What to look for

  • Lanes lead toward the Church of the Holy Sepulchre from several directions.
  • The Muristan and Church of the Redeemer sit close to the quarter's main shrine.

Useful to know

  • Use the Holy Sepulchre as an anchor, then explore the Muristan and nearby churches on foot.
  • Check each church's access separately; the quarter has no single visiting schedule.
