Damascus Gate

Damascus Gate is the Old City's imposing northern entrance. The descending approach, Ottoman stonework and immediate connection to market streets make it a strong starting point for orientation.

Damascus Gate

Why go

The gate offers a clear transition from outside the walls into the dense street network of the Old City. Built under Suleiman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century, it faces north and leads toward the Muslim Quarter's markets. Its towers and descending steps make the structure easier to read than a gate glimpsed in passing. The ancient Cardo axis also began here and ran south through the city.

What to look for

  • Steps descend toward the gate rather than rising to it.
  • Two stone towers frame the northern entrance.
  • The old Cardo axis leads south from the gate.

Useful to know

  • Approach from outside the walls to see the gate's full profile before entering the Muslim Quarter.
  • Use the gate as a starting point for the quarter's market lanes.
