Why go
Alfama preserves a tight urban fabric that escaped much of the destruction of the 1755 earthquake. Moving between the Cathedral, Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol reveals how the old district rises from the river toward São Jorge Castle, with fado woven into its later cultural identity.
What to look for
- Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol open broad Tagus views from the hillside.
- Narrow lanes and small squares retain the district’s pre-earthquake street pattern.
- Lisbon Cathedral and São Vicente de Fora mark different edges of the historic quarter.
Useful to know
- Walk downhill from São Jorge Castle if you want to reduce the hardest climbing.
- Wear shoes with grip for steep cobbles and uneven steps.
- Use the Cathedral, Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol as anchors, then let smaller lanes fill the route between them.
