Why go
The façade preserves carved stonework reused when the church was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake and reoriented toward Rua da Alfândega. Its portal compresses a remarkable sculptural programme into a small frontage, linking late Manueline decoration with Lisbon’s later reconstruction.
What to look for
- The portal frames the Virgin of Mercy with nobles and clergy beneath an ornate Manueline arch.
- Figures of the Virgin Mary and the Angel Gabriel occupy canopied niches beside the entrance.
- Armillary spheres, cherubs, medallions and vegetal carving survive in the reused stonework.
Useful to know
- View the façade even if the interior is inaccessible; most of the distinctive detail is concentrated around the portal.
- Confirm worship and visitor access before planning to enter.
- Pair the stop with the nearby Cathedral or a walk toward Praça do Comércio.
