Ancient Theatre of Fourvière
The oldest Roman theatre in Gaul spreads across the Fourvière slope, with reconstructed seating and a broad stage that still hosts performances.
Why go
Its scale makes Roman Lugdunum tangible in a way isolated ruins cannot. Walk through the seating to understand how the audience faced the stage and city beyond, then compare the large theatre with the smaller odeon next door. Together they form an unusually complete performance complex.
What to look for
Hillside seating around the broad stage
The theatre's 108-metre diameter
Direct comparison with the neighboring odeon
Useful to know
Wear shoes suited to old stone and uneven routes.
Check seasonal site hours and performance closures before climbing up.
