The first chapel was founded in 1622 by people from a ship that escaped Dutch capture. Sailors later used the site before hazardous voyages, so the hilltop position has meaning beyond the view. The climb and open setting are part of the visit; allow extra time in heat and check access before expecting an interior stop.
