The full story

Fort Saint-Louis occupies a headland above the bay and port of Fort-de-France. A guided visit links its stone defenses to the capital’s colonial and maritime history.

The seventeenth-century fortress is still a working military site, so entry depends on an organized visit rather than a casual walk through the gates. Its position explains why the bay mattered strategically. From the ramparts, look back toward the city and across the water to the Trois-Îlets shore.

  • Vauban-style walls enclose the citadel.
  • The fort overlooks Fort-de-France Bay.

Confirm the current guided-tour procedure before going.
