Cappella Palatina
Inside the Royal Palace, the Palatine Chapel concentrates Palermo's Norman, Byzantine and Islamic artistic languages in one richly decorated room. Its setting makes it a natural focus of a palace visit.
Look from the glowing Byzantine mosaics to the painted, honeycomb-like ceiling above the nave. Their coexistence makes the chapel a particularly clear expression of the cultural synthesis associated with Norman Palermo, and a more intimate experience than the palace rooms around it.
What to look for
Gold-ground Byzantine mosaics across the chapel
The painted muqarnas ceiling above the nave
A royal chapel embedded within the palace complex
Useful to know
Plan the chapel and Royal Palace together, but check their access separately; the palace rooms have different visiting arrangements.
Look up from the mosaics to the ceiling before leaving; they are contrasting parts of the same interior.
Confirm chapel access close to your visit, as liturgy and events can alter it.
