Why go
The garden combines a working botanical collection with features that are easy to seek out: the Aquarium basin, the great Ficus magnolioide and Serra Carolina. Its older formal layout also shows how plants were once arranged for study. It is a good change of pace from Palermo’s churches and palaces.
What to look for
- The Aquarium is a large basin devoted to aquatic plants.
- The Ficus magnolioide is one of the garden’s signature trees.
- Serra Carolina is a historic glasshouse within the garden.
Useful to know
- Check the official garden timetable before planning a late-afternoon visit.
- Leave time to explore beyond the entrance; the basin, ficus and glasshouse are separate points of interest.
- The garden can be combined with the university’s Steri complex near Piazza Marina.
