Piazza del Campidoglio

Michelangelo’s civic square reshapes the Capitoline summit through a unified ensemble of palaces, a broad cordonata and carefully controlled views.

Piazza del Campidoglio

Why go

This is the Capitoline as Renaissance urban design rather than ancient ruin. The sloping approach, trapezoidal piazza and coordinated façades turn an irregular hilltop into a formal civic stage. Its placement also rewards a short detour to the Roman Forum overlook behind the palaces.

What to look for

  • Walk up the Cordonata and watch the three palace façades gradually align around the square.
  • Use the central equestrian figure of Marcus Aurelius as the visual pivot of Michelangelo’s composition.
  • Continue around the Palazzo Senatorio for one of the clearest elevated views into the Roman Forum.

Useful to know

  • Allow 30–45 minutes for the outdoor ensemble and Forum overlook.
  • The Capitoline Museums occupy the flanking palaces and require a separate, much longer visit.
  • Approach from Piazza Venezia, then descend toward the Forum to preserve the square’s intended reveal.
