Why go

The church is a place to hear Savannah’s Black religious history in a congregation that still owns and interprets it. Its sanctuary and historical displays make the visit more meaningful than an exterior stop on Franklin Square. Give the guided account time; the congregation’s history cannot be read from the facade alone.

What to look for

  • The church stands beside Franklin Square.
  • A church-led tour interprets the sanctuary and congregation’s history.
  • Historical displays connect the present church with its earlier members.

The full story

First African Baptist Church traces its roots to Black Baptist worship in the eighteenth century, when enslaved and free African Americans built congregational life under severe restrictions. George Leile, an African American preacher who had been enslaved, helped convert early members along the Savannah River. Later leaders and members organized a congregation whose history became intertwined with several Savannah Black Baptist churches. Disagreements and splits in the nineteenth century produced distinct congregations, including the First Bryan Baptist Church; their shared origins should not erase their separate present identities. The church at Franklin Square continues to tell this history through its own tours. Listen for the choices made by the people who founded, led and sustained the congregation, rather than reducing the visit to a claim about which church was “first.” The building is both a historic landmark and an active place of worship.

Useful to know

  • Use the church’s official tour channel and confirm the departure on your visit day.
  • Allow the church’s activities to take precedence over a sightseeing plan.
  • Pair the tour with nearby Franklin Square rather than treating the square as the whole story.
