Civic Landmarks and Sacred Shanghai

A choice-led route linking Old City worship, People’s Square institutions, Suzhou Creek architecture and two major religious sites across Shanghai.

Civic Landmarks and Sacred Shanghai

Why go

Start with City God Temple or People’s Square, depending on whether you want Old City religious history or a civic center framed by the museum and Grand Theatre. The General Post Office sits north by Suzhou Creek, while Jing’an Temple lies west along Nanjing Road. St Ignatius Cathedral is farther southwest in Xujiahui and needs a separate transfer. Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall fit naturally with People’s Square, especially for an indoor block. This is an ambitious grouping of choices, not a fixed walking circuit. Pair the square with the theatre and planning hall, or pair a temple with one nearby landmark, then leave the distant cathedral for another day.
