Why go
The building makes Strasbourg's role as a university and research city visible. Step inside to see the staircase beneath its dome, then compare the library's position on the former Kaiserplatz with the Palais du Rhin opposite. Exhibitions can add a second reason to visit when scheduled.
What to look for
- The monumental staircase beneath the dome
- The library's position facing the Palais du Rhin across Place de la République
- Exhibitions drawn from or connected to the BNU's collections when programmed
The full story
The Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire stands on Place de la République, the former Kaiserplatz, opposite the Palais du Rhin. That placement makes it part of the grand civic setting created when Strasbourg was reshaped under German rule. Its monumental staircase and dome give the library a public architectural presence even for visitors who are not using its reading rooms. The BNU is also a working research institution, with collections that reach far beyond a conventional circulating library: early printed books, manuscripts and papyri sit alongside material from Alsatian families and religious communities. Those holdings help explain why the building has a national as well as a university role. The most useful way to approach it as a casual visitor is to separate the two experiences. The public architectural route reaches the staircase; consulting collections and entering reader areas require the appropriate access. Temporary exhibitions, when offered, provide a different way to encounter the institution's holdings.
Useful to know
- Without a reader card, keep the architectural visit to the public route as far as the level-two staircase.
- Check exhibition schedules separately from the library's opening information.
- From the public staircase, look across Place de la République to compare the library with the other imperial buildings.
